Clark Botanic Garden is the legacy of Fanny Dwight Clark and her husband Grenville, who moved from Manhattan to Nassau County in the 1920s. Like many people who gravitate to Long Island, the Clarks wanted to give their family a less stressful life while still having easy access to the city. As a lifelong gardening enthusiast, Fanny turned her skills to designing and creating the stunning gardens that attract numerous residents and visitors today. Located on the one-time Gold Coast, Planting Fields is known as "a celebration of of art, architecture, and landscape." The 409-acre estate, landscaped by the legendary Olmsted Brothers, features spacious rolling lawns, formal gardens, wooded areas, and plants. Don't miss the Italian Garden, which dates back to 1916 and is set off from the rest of the grounds by a sunken center that creates a feeling of seclusion. Planting Fields is open daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and there's no charge to access the grounds, but there is an $8 parking fee. - Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park - 440 Montauk Hwy., Great River, NY 11739
In 1936, when Olivia James transferred her family's estate to the Long Island State Park Commission, she specified that it should be used as "an oasis of beauty and of quiet." As per Olivia's wishes, that's exactly what visitors find at Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park. On the 691-acre grounds, which include a stately country mansion, guests stroll the grounds to explore the gardens and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the onsite Hidden Oak Cafe. While Old Westbury Gardens may be situated on Long Island, you'll feel as though you're in the elegant English countryside. A breathtaking Charles II-style mansion forms the centerpiece in the midst of 200 acres covered with formal gardens, woodlands, and ponds. Settle in for a picnic lunch or dine al fresco at Cafe in the Woods. Immerse yourself in early 19th-century British life during Regency Romance Weekend, a family-friendly event on 5/3-5/4 celebrating the 250th birthday of Jane Austen. With 127 rooms across 109,000 square feet, Oheka Castle is the second-largest private residence ever built in the United States. Constructed during the fabled Gilded Age of the 1920s, the eye-popping Castle later served as a retreat and a school before restoration began in 1984. The original Olmsted Brothers drawings provided the template for the formal gardens with eight reflecting pools and three fountains. Plan a weekend (or more) of luxury with a stay at the onsite hotel. Admission to the grounds is free, with guided tours available for the Castle and gardens.
