Have you stopped for a minute to appreciate the vastness of the night sky? It's something many of us take for granted, but there is something very peaceful and calming about the stars. Our real estate agents have found stargazing to be a calming and mindful hobby, and it's one of our favorite things to do on a warm summer evening. By observing and learning about the stars, constellations, and planets, you can expand your knowledge and appreciation for the entire world around us. If you'd like to take up this fascinating hobby, here are a few tips to help you get started on Long Island.
- NYS Stargazing Permit - Long Island, NY
Light pollution and stargazing do not mix, which is why so many astronomers go to Long Island parks to get a great view of the night sky. The NYS Stargazing permit allows you to access some of Long Island's best parks during evening hours. The permit is valid from sundown to sun up at Robert Moses, Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow, Montauk Point, Wildwood, Hither Hills. Permits are $35 for NYS residents and $60 for non-NYS residents. Permits are assigned to your vehicle, and they can be purchased online.
- The Reichert Planetarium - 180 Little Neck Rd, Centerport, NY 11721
Transport yourself across the solar system at the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium at the Vanderbilt Museum. This community asset has been showing cutting-edge programming on Long Island since 1971 including full-dome films, star talks, laser shows, and concerts. The dome is 60 feet tall and has 147 comfortable seats and a 5.1 surround sound system. The planetarium is just down the road from some of our favorite Suffolk County homes for sale.
- Robert Moses State Park - Robert Moses Causeway, Babylon, NY 11702
This ocean beachfront park has nearly 5 miles of coastline and is an awesome place to catch a glimpse of the stars over the ocean. Some of the best stargazing spots at Robert Moses Star Park are around the portion of the park that borders Fire Island, as there is less light pollution. There is a good chance you'll run into other stargazing groups while you're there.
- Montauk Point State Park - 2000 Old Montauk Hwy, Montauk, NY 11954
Because it's at the very eastern tip of Long Island, Montauk Point State Park makes for a great stargazing spot because of the limited light pollution. The park itself has nice trails, coastlines, restrooms, and plenty of parking. If you stop by the park in February, you might even be able to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way galaxy.
- Touch The Stars at Cradle of Aviation Museum - Charles Lindbergh Blvd, Garden City, NY 11530
Learn all about the robotic spacecraft NASA uses to explore our solar system and beyond. Touch The Stars is a special film that traces the journey of probes and orbiters around space, and you can see it at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
