Winter Checklist

However, with that beauty comes some duties that all homes must fulfill in order to have a pleasant season. If you are not careful, the cold weather and impending snowfall might cause damage to your home. Follow these procedures throughout the year to keep your house secure despite the hazardous weather.
Preseason prep
Before the winter sets in, make sure your home is well-insulated against the elements. This includes inspecting your windows, vents, and roof in the months preceding winter. Install weather stripping around the frames of your windows and doors to keep the cold out, and repair any missing or broken roof tiles. You should also seal crawl space vents to keep the heat in and protect your home from the elements. Additionally, before the temps drop, inspect the insulation on your pipes. If your pipes burst, you might be in for a very expensive and inconvenient situation.
Throughout the season
Keeping your house safe in the winter does not end when the season arrives. Several checks should be performed throughout the cold months to ensure that everything is functioning properly. To maintain your furnace functioning effectively, clean and change the filters on a regular basis. You should also inspect your roof regularly, especially after it has snowed or rained. Ice dams may form and cause interior leaks as well as weighting down your roof. Additional insulation in your roof should be able to solve this problem. Finally, maintain your faucets at a gentle trickle on those nights when the temperatures plummet. Running water can assist in keeping pipes from freezing.
End-of-winter considerations
It's easy to get caught up in the anticipation of warmer weather, but that doesn't mean your home improvement projects should come to a halt. This is the most critical time to clean snow and debris from gutters. The warmer weather melts the snow and allows rain to pour, which means your home will require water removal. If your gutters are clogged, water will not be able to flow away from your foundation, which might lead to major concerns. This is also the time to inspect and clean your air conditioning equipment.
